Goodbye....

Hershey was very old. She would have been 17 years old October 2000. Knowing that she had lived such a long life and fulfilling life should have made it easier. It wasn’t. The last few years made her movements very slow. Otherwise, she was the same ol’ Hershey….smiling and happy.

The time came without warning. After a morning at the doctor’s without any conclusive results, I took her home to await further tests. I think it was then that I knew.

When we went back that afternoon, the decision was taken out of our hands. During diagnostic surgery, it was discovered that she had pancreatic cancer and it had taken her over. The doctor was amazed that she had not shown any symptoms prior to this day. She was amazed she was alive.

There really was no decision to make. We had to let her sleep. Our pain was great….yet, she was at peace.

So very many people knew her. Everyone always asked about her. Right up to the end she still loved to go and she still loved everyone. She was winning over hearts to the very end.

I miss her so very much. I never realized how much I touched her until she was gone. I never realized how much I counted on her being there. The wounds may heal, but she’ll never be forgotten.
